In this writeup we go over the installation process for a Shelby GT500 wing on a stock 2009 Mustang GT. Our test vehicle has the stock OEM GT spoiler from the factory.
Tools Required:
- 10 MM Socket
- Utility Blade
The first step in the process is removing the stock spoiler. It is held on with (4) 10MM bolts as shown in the picture below and super strong adhesive! There are two bolts per side. Do not discard these bolts! You will be re-using them to attach the new GT500 wing.
After removing all four bolts, the spoiler will still be stuck to the decklid thanks to 3M adhesive underneath the base. Don't worry about it falling off once the bolts are removed. In the picture below you can see the gray 3M tape underneath the base of the spoiler.
While someone is pulling up on the spoiler, use your utility knife and cut through the adhesive as you work your way around the spoiler base. Take your time to ensure you don't scratch the decklid.
This is what you'll be left with after removing the stock spoiler from the decklid.
Now its time for the installation of your new rear spoiler. Remove the paper backing off the three sections of 3M tape that comes on the GT500 wing. There are two smaller pieces and one long section. It is imperative that you remove the tape and expose the adhesive before bolting the spoiler back on. The picture below shows our tech removing the tape on the long section.
Next, align the (4) studs on the new spoiler with the (4) holes on the decklid. Once the spoiler is seated in place, shut the trunk and press firmly all along the edge of the spoiler. This will bond the 3M adhesive on the underside of the spoiler to the decklid.
The final step is to re-install the (4) 10 mm bolts that were taken off in step one. The key thing here is to not over tighten the bolts!
Here is the finished product:
